GENERAL INFORMATION
TANZANIA
This picturesque country, 930,704 sq. kms in size,
lies just south of the Equator on the East coast of Africa. Its cosmopolitan population of 30 million people come from 120 different tribes, all contributing
to the country's rich cultural heritage.
SEASONS
January to March can be quite hot in Tanzania and
from April to May the country gets heavy rain. The dry season is from July to October, and around
November - December it gets short rains. The rain pattern however has been less regular in recent
years.
DRESS
In wildlife lodge the emphasis is on comfort and informality. Light cotton clothing for the day and long
sleeved shirts / trousers for the evenings is ideal. Bright colours should be avoided for wildlife viewing.
Ngorongoro can get quite cold at night so it is advisable to have a warm sweater. A safari hat is a
must and you will find the following items useful: Sunglasses, suntan lotion, insect repellent cream or spray, flash light, binoculars, swimming costume, a
good book and "wet ones".
IMMIGRATION
Visitors are required to have a valid passport and
visa. These are readily obtainable from consulates and diplomatic missions. Where no diplomatic
representation exists, visas may be issued on arrival,
however it is best to consult your travel agent before making definite departure plans.
HEALTH
A yellow fever vaccination is required for all travellers to Tanzania.
It is advisable
to take anti malarial
precautions under
guidance of
your medical practitioner before departure.
CURRENCY
There is no restriction on the importation of foreign currency. The import or export of the Tanzanian Shilling is prohibited. Payment for safaris must be
made in foreign currency. Visitors can change money at the Bureau de Change
which can be used for shopping, drinks and other personal expenses. The exchange rates fluctuate
from day to day.
INSURANCE
It is a condition that any person taking a Wildersun
Safari must have a valid insurance cover for personal accident, evacuation,
medical attendance, baggage loss and trip cancellation.
In addition we
highly recommend taking a First Air Responder tourist cover at a nominal fee of
25 Usd per person for a 14 days cover in Tanzania. First Air Responder
fills the gap that international insurances leave uncovered by physically having
ground teams and equipment available to respond in country, by whatever means -
road or 4WD ambulance, fixed winged or rotor aircraft or even on foot. Most
international insurances assume that there is a physical mechanism in a country
that will respond to an emergency even if they need to pay for it later.
In
AIRPORT TAX
An airport departure tax of 30 usd and a security tax of 8 usd per person is
applicable when departing the country. A local departure / security
tax of 6 usd per person is applicable on all regional flights.
